The Aermacchi MB-339CB is an Italian fast jet trainer designed in the mid 1970’s as a replacement for the commercially successful MB-326. The airframe shares a lot of similarities with the MB-326 trainer with the exception of the forward half of the fuselage being redesigned to allow for vertically staggered tandem cockpit such that the instructor can see over the pupil.
The RNZAF acquired 18 Aermacchi MB-339s during the early 1990s as a replacement for the aging Strikemaster fleet. The “Macchis” provided the RNZAF with a training capability that bridged the gap from the ab initio CT/4 trainer, to the A-4 Skyhawk. The Macchi fleet also provide the
RNZAF with a second-line attack capability, and could be equipped with 12.7mm gun pods, bombs and rockets.
The aircraft on display, NZ6471, was built and delivered to No.14 Squadron in 1992. In 2012 it was donated to NZ Warbirds at Ardmore.

A great day was had by all on Sunday with hundreds turning out at the Classic Flyers NZ Aero day at Tauranga. Newly rated Corsair pilot Frank Parker took this picture yesterday of his view flying the historic fighter to Omaka from Hood Aerodrome.
