Heinemann’s Hot-Rod! The McDonnell Douglas Skyhawk is a lightweight, attack aircraft developed for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps in the early 1950s. It is one of the most versatile and successful aircraft ever produced with some 2,960 produced. Several Skyhawks remain in use by civilian and military users 60 years after the type’s first flight.
NZ6209 was one of the original 14 A-4Ks delivered to the RNZAF in 1970 and served with No. 75 & No.2 Squadrons during her service. A total of 24 Skyhawks served in the RNZAF from 1970 – 2001 including 10 A4G Skyhawks purchased from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). In 1986 the entire Skyhawk fleet was upgraded under Project Kahu, an RNZAF program that gave modern avionics and weapon systems similar to that of an F-16 A/B mid life upgrade.
“09” was retired from service on the 13th of December, 2001, as part of a controversial decision by the then NZ government to retire the entire fast jet fleet without replacement and was given to the NZ Warbirds Association on permanent loan in 2012.
