Auster J/5 Adventurer

Designed and built by Auster Aircraft Ltd. the J/5 Adventurer is a three-seat high-wing monoplane developed from the J/1 Autocrat. It featured a more powerful 130hp engine for better performance in Australian and New Zealand conditions where most of the type were sold. 59 examples of the type were constructed between 1948 and 1952.
The aircraft on display (NZ1702) is one of six Adventurers delivered to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) to modernize its light utility and communication capabilities. It was allocated to the Communications Flight based at Rongatai Airport (Wellington International Airport) and later at Rotorua to be used for forestry patrols. It was then assigned to No. 3 Battlefield Support Squadron until 1969. It was the last Auster to be in service with the RNZAF.
Of special note a seventh Auster was acquired in 1956 for the RNZAF Antarctic Flight which supported the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition. This aircraft, NZ1707, is on display at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Christchurch.

ZK-TGN ‘rolling 21’ back in December 2020 during its first public display at Warbirds on Parade.
This aircraft now resides at the Ashburton Aviation Museum but for a number of years resided at NZ Warbirds at Ardmore.
It has been modified to have a 14-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R2000 rated at 1450 HP (not the 9-cylinder Wright R-1820 Cyclone typical for the type).

A great day was had by all on Sunday with hundreds turning out at the Classic Flyers NZ Aero day at Tauranga.
